CD-ROMS

Try the Prime Time Math Cd-ROMs from Tom Snyder. Each CD has a
differnent scenerio -- a hospital emergency, a fire, a crime, etc.
Students divide into groups of four and assume roles (doctors,
investigators, etc.). Students must listen to the video to get facts,
perform calculations, and consult with other group members to find
answers to their individual questions. It is a good activity for
listening, problem solving, applying math formulas and learning to work
in a group. The only drawback is it's limited use. It's pretty much a
one-time per class use.

OTHER IDEAS

One thing I did that the math department enjoyed was cutting the fines by
percentages. If you don't charge fines of course you can't do it but we
do so the week before report cards go out I have announced that fines will
be reduced by 1/2, 1/3, etc. If students get the answer correct they
only have to pay the reduced amount. If they don't get it right they have
to pay the whole amount.

Just a thought. I also give math story problems whenever possible. i.e.
Our library lost 100 books last year. If the average price of a book is
$15.00, how much did the taxpayers lose? or last year we had 50 students
participate in our Teen Read Week turn off the TV project. How many
students should participate if we want to increase the participation by
100%.
