I am looking for some fresh ideas for 6th graders. We have a rigid library schedule whereby each class from k-6 has a half-hour library class each week, usually with no classroom assignment. I have been trying to change this for three years, but I can't change an entire culture, and without a principal on the job for more than a semester I am spinning my wheels. Teachers want the half-hour free time. Their schedule allows a half-hour for library, phy. ed. and music, and heaven forbid that anyone should change that. The problem is that we are having a hard time keeping 5th and 6th graders busy for a half hour when they (like the teachers) think it is their free time. They are noisy and rambunctious and management alone is a challenge much less getting them interested in the library. There are some students who are interested in looking at books and checking them out, but about half of them couldn't care less. Help! Help! Before I lose my mind. Thanks.
