Rebecca-- I do elementary. Yes, I do censor what is in the library. Some books I have told the students that they will need to wait until they get into middle school. I also tell them that they cn get it in the public library. I do not feel that all books are appropriate for a K-5 school. Therefore, I judge whether: 1--Book is part of curriculum 2--At a reading level that is in my school 3--Appropriate language for K-5 4--Appropriate themes for K-5 #s: 1-2 are the first two criteria. The next two are judgement calls. Sometimes I do not feel that it is appropriate for this level because of my beliefs, and then will have a second person judge if it is one that is highly recommended. Hope this helps. I learned in college that lots of censorship begins with the selection process.
