Here was my original question:

*****Does anyone know if it's possible, and if so, how to get a song to play
throughout a powerpoint slideshow? The teacher doesn't want it on just one
slide, nor does she want it to start over everytime she transitions to a new
slide. I realize she could just put a CD in the drive and play it while
doing the slideshow, but she wants to see if there is a way to insert it
into her powerpoint presentation - and she probably will want to loop it. If
you have any suggestions I'd really appreciate it!*****

Thank you to everyone who gave me advice on this request. The complete
directions on how to do this are posted below. I did have a few people
gently remind me about copyright implications. If the song is copyrighted,
legally only a 30 second clip of the song can be used. Even if the song is
in public domain, as one very helpful person wrote "a recording of a song
can't be in the public domain because the recording technology (except for
wax cylinders) isn't old enough. The actual sheet music might be in the
public domain (older than 75 years), but recordings have a separate
copyright which belongs to the performer and/or recording
company." When I relayed this informatin to the teacher she decided to skip
the music for now.

I had many requests for a HIT so I made a presentation just to test out the
suggestions people gave me. Here is what I did.

TO GET A SONG TO PLAY FROM A FILE STORED ON YOUR COMPUTER DO THIS:

Make sure you're on the first slide which you'd like the music to begin
playing. Go to the Insert menu at the top and click Movies and Sounds, then
click Sound from File. Next select the midi file, or whatever type you're
choosing, from its location and it will be inserted onto that slide. You'll
see a sound icon appear on that slide. Then go to the Slide Show menu and
select Custom Animation. Click the timing tab. Select the sound file from
the list (it should say Media 1) then click animate (you can decide whether
you want it to animate on the mouse click or automatically). Make sure it is
number 1 in the animation order box. Next click the Play Settings tab. Check
the box for Play Using Animation Order. Under "While Playing" click Continue
Slide Show. Then under "Stop Playing" click after # slides. Put in the
number of slides in your presentation in the box. Now click the More Options
button, and check the box for Loop Until Stopped (if your slide show is
longer than your song this will loop it).Click ok and you should be ready!

TO GET A SONG TO PLAY FROM A CD DO THIS:

Make sure you're on the first slide which you'd like the music to begin
playing. Go to the Insert menu at the top and click Movies and Sounds, then
click play CD audio track. The CD must be in the CD-ROM drive. A Play
Options window will appear. Check the box for "Loop Until Stopped" then
under "Play CD audio track" put the song (track) number in under start and
end. Click ok and it will be inserted onto that slide. You'll see a CDicon
appear on that slide. Then go to the Slide Show menu and select Custom
Animation. Click the timing tab. Select the sound file from the list (it
should say Media 1) then click animate (you can decide whether you want it
to animate on the mouse click or automatically). . Make sure it is number 1
in the animation order box. Next click the Play Settings tab. Check the box
for Play Using Animation Order. Under "While Playing" click Continue Slide
Show. Then under "Stop Playing" click after # slides. Put in the number of
slides in your presentation in the box. Click ok and you should be ready!
