I agree that public librarians, for the most part, do appear to
receive lower or at the very least the same pay as school librarians
but have to work all year, weekends, and evenings. But let us not
for forget that there are many other types of librarians as well.
All major industries and government agencies have libraries and so do
all universities and colleges. I don't feel we need necessarily
compare salaries and occupations to public librarians only. Let's
look at the profession as a whole.

I, too, consider myself a librarian first since I worked for many
years in government libraries before making the switch to school
libraries. I did not receive lower pay because I was a librarian.
We were paid on the same scale as any other professional in the
government. As a matter of fact, since I had an MLS, I started out
with higher pay.

I think that there are many of us who do not come to school libraries
via teaching and hence the difference in how we perceive our jobs,
not in how we do them. We all teach. I think that people in every
profession teach to some extent. We just happen to be librarians in
schools, so we teach more than most. We could also get into the
debate as to why, if we are considered teachers, the state of NJ does
not allow librarians to get a teaching certificate via alternate
route when every other teacher in the state can do it - classroom
teachers, PE, art and music teachers can all use this route to get a
teaching certificate, but librarians can not.
