Joni, TK, and our favorite Latin friend, Et Al.,
Don't overlook the fact that public librarians have quite a bit of a
division of labor sort of organization...
The pretty much know what they are going to do every day... The reference
librarians don't get involved much with circulation... The catalogers
rarely see a patron about anything... The circulation librarians rarely get
involved with the technology or the online references... The collection
development librarians never catalog or work the circulation desk... and
hardly any licensed librarian shelves books - they have non-degree interns,
minimum wage employees, and volunteers who do that sort of thing... unlike
a school librarian who is everything to everyone everyday! Public
librarians don't have teachers and parents and administrators and students
demanding they do more with less simply because the last school they worked
at, or attended, had a librarian who seemed to do everything with nothing!
So, although the pay is less or perhaps comparable at times... the stress
level between jobs is no comparison! School librarians *need* that time
off!
