Julia's story about the Principal having to step in and check out books struck a nerve. Recently I had a teacher who wanted a book. I was talking to another teacher at the time. The teacher I was speaking to wanted to be clever and said "Oh, you want to check that out? Here, I can do it. It's so easy I teach my kids how to do this!" She then proceeded to try and check out the book. Of course, she ran into two problems and I had to bail her out. What gets me is that if they need the library during summer school they won't pay anyone to run it. Teachers are just put on the honor system to borrow and return. But come inventory time, I'm the one trying to account for the lost books. I feel that my library is just like a business. I can't think of any other area in the school where a person would go in and just do someone's job for them unless they had been cleared or trained. Would you do the DP clerk's job just because you wanted a student number? It irritates me when the school treats my job as "anyone can do this". They have no idea! Most of them wouldn't last a month!
