I have purchased books using two differing scenarios.  I am surprsed at
the Barnes and Noble situation, because I have often used my own charge
card and received tax empt status by showing a certificate that I carry
in my wallet.  However, I have not done this in the last six months so
that may have changed.  At Borders we have a house account that
guarantees a 20% discount and also has on record the tax empt
information.  I tend to use this more frequently because Borders has
better initial discounts.  It is simple to do: have your name as an
authorized buyer and you can have the bill sent directly to the school.
Of course, when Amazon.com has its shipping promotion, I buy new
releases from them.
