Hello. It saddens me that in the 15 years since I finished my masters in reading, the same old arguments are still going on! The synthetic phonics vs. whole language debate--which substituted for substance at times--was the reason I took a 5 year break in the middle of getting my master's degree. As in life in general, the answers are not to be found at the extreme opposite ends of the spectrum, but with a balance somewhere in between, adjusted as necessary for each learner.
