Stacey:

The small private high school I just left had a terrific "critter"
problem when I first began teaching there. Many species, in many
places. I could not even put my briefcase down on the floor without
fear of infestation. The whole school had problems.

I created a safe zone in the LMC by a multi-pronged attack, using
roach/ant bait and spray from Raid. The baits I used are small white
hexagons about 1.5" in diameter. I bought $30-$50 worth every year,
and it always held the bugs in check.

Some hints:
1. Lift the bottom shelves off the bookcases, if you have closed
bottom shelves. They like to hid in there. Throw in one bait
container per shelf unit. Replace it no less than annually.
2. Throw some bait benind EVERY file cabinet, wall cabinet, etc.
Alos place a bait under the bottom drawer of the file cabinet. ( Pull
out the drawer and toss one toward the back. I've found lots of them
like to hide under the bottome drawers.)
3. Place bait INSIDE every floor and wall mounted cabinet.
4. If you have a sink, place two-three baits under the sink, and
refresh every two months.
5. Spray the door thresholds with roach spray, and respray every
other Friday night. This tends to hold down the migration (and the
stink from the spray).
6. Try to find every crack in the side walls that they can use to
find a way into the library. Spray the spots bi-weekly.
7. Tape some bait stations UNDER the computer desks. They won't be
seen, but the bugs will find them.

Do all this on a Friday night. This will give the little beggars the
entire (quiet) weekend to find all the goodies and eat it. I always
felt that a massive amount of bait traps gave the creepie-crawlies
every opportunity for a massive dose the first time. It seemed to
work very well. After the first two weeks, I very rarely saw roaches
in the LMC. Those I saw were always *after* a shipment of boxes came
into the LMC.

Once I eliminated the interior bugs, keeping them out of the LMC was
much easier. Also be aware that the new boxes of books can also
harbor "friends."

If all else fails, have a professional extermination service come in
and spray. Have them do it on a Friday afternoon and let the stuff
work all weekend. DON"T go in until Monday to avoid the fumes, and
open all the windows wide for half an hour before the kids come in. I
used a large window fan to ventilate the room throughly.

Hope this helps...
