#holes in a golf course

Why does a golf course have 18 holes?
Since baseball has 9 innings, I wondered if the number was significant or is
there another reason? If anyone happens to know, I would appreciate it or
can you direct me to a site. I keep getting info on players and specific
courses.
Do I need this info? No. It is librarian thing. I heard someone ask the
question and now I am trying to find the answer out of curiosity. My head is
filled with useless(?) information, but this is not part of my collection.
I will share some of my information. I read somewhere that Heinz ketchup
flows from the bottle at 25 miles per year. I have no idea why I remember
such things and forget phone numbers of relatives.
