Re: Thanksgiving Dishes

Wait!  Where's the traditional Thanksgiving Lasagna?  Decades ago when my
in-laws moved out to the countryside of Queens, NY, they were the only ones
with a house.  Sooooo, everyone came to their home for the holidays.  To
stretch the available food, and appease the grandparents, my mother-in-law
would make lasagna.  It became a family tradition.
Over the years people dispersed and the lasagna was served, but no longer
eaten.  Years later my husband married the WASPy wife (me).  Several years
ago we were hosting Thanksgiving and I made the decision of not serving
lasagna as a side dish (everyone was eating low fat then).  Almost every
member of the Famiglia Laurita called to ask if I needed them to make the
lasagna.  I politely said, 'no.'
Thanksgiving arrived and I made a wonderful dinner.  We talked.  Laughed.
Had a great time.  No one ever missed the lasagna.  It has not made a
reappearance since that day.
I like to share this story with my students often.  1, It's cute.  2, It
helps to focus on what the essence of the holiday.  Amazingly it helps them
focus on essential information when they are doing reports.
