If you are employed, have been employed, are related to Someone who is employed or know someone employed by a Public School District in TX. this information is VERY IMPORTANT for you! Right now there is a law that anyone who draws retirement from TRS, Teacher Retirement System of TX., is NOT eligible to draw Social Security. This may be more important than you think. If you have ever had a job outside of a public school district, then you have paid into the Social Security system but will NEVER be allowed to draw from the S.S. system. If you are married and your spouse draws S.S. you will NEVER be able to draw S.S. on them. For many, many Public School Employees this has become financially devastating upon the death of their spouse. If you are drawing your Teacher's retirement and your spouse is drawing S.S. upon their death you will ONLY be able to draw your Teacher's retirement OR your portion of their S.S. and NOT draw BOTH. This Bill is very unfair and singles out school employees. For more information about this bill (GOP/WEP Social Security Amendment of 1983) log on to: www.tellbuck@mail.house.gov There is a NEW bill, HR 2638, the "Social Security Fairness Act of 2001" if passed it will repeal the Social Security GOP/WEP Amendment of 1983.
