Learning Center Changes

The NDL Learning Center will be closed from December 17, 2001 to
January 4, 2002 to allow for the installation and repair of several
windows that have been damaged in recent weeks. Until further notice,
the Center will be open by appointment for scheduled presentations or
other events. This includes the noon daily demonstration. The current
schedule for Learning Center Activities can be found at
http://lcweb.loc.gov/staff/ndlvc/. There is also a link on that page to
a registration form that allows staff to schedule the use of the
Learning Center online. For further information or to schedule the
Learning Center without using the online form contact the E-Reference
Administrative Assistant at 7-4158.

These actions are necessitated by the changes in the National Digital
Library Program that will integrate the functions of the NDL into
several areas of the Library of Congress. Most of the Learning Center
staff will be moving to the Adams Building to join the new E-Reference
Team, which will be a part of Library Services. According to team leader
Marilyn Parr, "The new E-Reference team will continue the educational
outreach programs and public demonstrations of American Memory and the
Library's website. Also the team will handle incoming queries to
American Memory and the Learning Page, develop new strategies in the
virtual reference environment, and incorporate distance learning into
the Library's public service. In addition to handling 400-500 reference
queries per month, the digital reference staff will continue to give
workshops, video conferences, and demonstrations of the Library's
website and digital collections." The E-Reference team is composed of 11
digital reference specialists, administrative staff, and a coordinator.
The team reports to Diane Kresh, Director for Public Service
Collections.
