LM_NET: Library Media Networking
It seems to me that the reason we 'have to explain why there is fiction
in the non-fiction section' is because we (or rather our predecessors)
have chosen to make a systemic change.
M. Dewey developed a system to organize libraries. A system better than
'the first book the library collected is on the shelf by the door'. It
didn't differentiate between Fiction and Non-Fiction, all having a place
specific by subject or style (English poetry, American plays, istory,
geography, etc).
Probably mostly based society's attitudes toward popular literature,
fiction started getting pulled out of the system and shelved separately.
It would be interesting to learn more of that transition; why didn't
poetry suffer the same fate?
Rather than try to explain some subtle variations on true and not-true,
maybe we should just fess-up and explain that the Fiction section was
added on to a previous system. And that the Fiction section really
should be called 'the Novels (and ShortStories) section. It isn't that
we are inconsistent with the F-NF, we just misnamed the pull-out
section.
