Wow, You guys are Awesome!!! I had my answer in less
than 15 minutes thanks to Jim, Steve, Clete & Suby.
Here's the responses:

***
In post Roman Britain the invading Saxons set up a
parley. The two sides were seated Saxon, Britain,
etc. At a given signal, the Saxons took
knives out of their long sleeves and killed the
Britains. After that, people shook hands to show
that there were no concealed weapons.

***
The legend has that the handshake started in the Roman
period when men would grip the right forearm of
another to prove that they were not armed with a
sword.

I did a quick search on Google.com for "victorian
manners" and got
several suggestions. The above are just a couple.

I also just did another search for handshake +origin
and got lots of
hits. I love Google.com!

This custom began in the middle ages. This gesture
showed you were not
armed and not a threat to your guest.

***
I do not know when it started, but the purpose of
extending the right hand was to show that you were
unarmed and with arm extended, one could not easily
draw their sword.
