Wow this list is great! have been using a lot of the information I find on the list and today after doing a presentation to a student group, one of them asked me how I managed to "know" so much about so many topics! I told him LM_NET first and foremost. Anyway thanks to the many who replied to my request , here is the hit . I have not checked these out ( for two reasons--one I don't know what he has and two I am about four days away from a play production that has gone completely out of control-- off to paint a staircase!) A good starting point might be to check out bibliofind.com and see if anyone else is selling the same editions and see what they're asking. I use http://www.bookfinder.com eBay also has a book section. Have the teacher use www.addall.com Click on used books. Put in the title of one of the books Do a search. See what results it comes up with. It will tell you what dealers on the web have that book for sale and their asking price. It's really a good way of getting to know if a book you have is valuable and also a real good resource if you are looking for that out-of-print book. I am a librarian also in the book business. Tell the teacher there are several websites the best is www.bookfinder.com or ww.alibris.com As with any collectible - with books - condition is everything. I've gone to two sites for old books (actually books I've weeded from the collection). They are GosenRareBooks@aol.com or bookshop@hincebooks.com.au (Australian site). Also, I ask a used bookstore owner for help, too. Good luck. If you have books in which you question their value, you may wish to contact *Booked Up* a bookstore in Texas. phone is 940-574-2511 or FAX 940-574-4245. Trivia: This bookstore is owned by Larry McMurtry. He has purchased almost all of the buildings around the town square in Archer City, Texas (where Last Picture Show was filmed). The buildings now house his extensive used/antique/rare book store. It is well organized. For example: each building specifically houses a particular focus; i.e. children's books, English Literature, History, etc. He will locate titles for you if you are seeking a specific title. It is a great place to spend a Saturday! One approach is to search for the books at used booksellers and see what the going rate is. I use: www.bookfinder.com. It is connected to many different booksellers and, in all likelihood, your books will show up. If not, you can find rare book dealers by doing a Google search for something like: "antiquarian books", "rare books", etc. There are pricing guides like Kovel's for books as well as antiques. He could check with the local bookstore or library to see if they have a copy. Also, if he checks in the yellow pages under books, he might find a listing for an antiquarian bookstore that could give him some advice. I would suggest alibris.com . I don't know of a site just for evaluation, but alibris can give a clue, sort of doing it in reverse--type in a title, and learn where and for how much it can be purchased. I'm sure there are other places to find this information too. , The following url will take you to a pretty informative book collectors web site. I found a lot of good information in it. I hope it helps your teacher- and you in the process :) http://www.rarebooks.org/default.htm yes there is - I believe it is Amazon.com - they have an old book auction section Try abebooks.com- it’s a web data base of many , many used bookstores and you can search by author/title. You can see what a book is selling for and get some idea if it’s worth anything. Going rule of thumb is that a dealer will pay you 50% of what they will sell it for. It’s also worth trying ebay( which is a great place to sell old books. HIH Darlene Yasick, Media Specialist Hopkins High School lib027yas@juno.com Only a mediocre person is always at his best.
