Target: dividing collection

A colleague and I need to divide part of my collection as the 3rd grade
is moving up to her intermediate building.  My collection has about
12,000 items.  We need to come up with a proposal for our superintendent
on how we would like to do this.  For those of you who have done this,
can you give us any estimate of the time it would take?  Any advice on
the process?
