Denver Public Schools, in beautiful Denver, Colorado expects to have 10 to 20 openings for Library Media Specialists for the 2001/2002 school year due to a favorable retirement plan. Denver Public Schools is a progressive district that has excellent support from its community. The community has recently shown its support by passing a bond issue for new buildings and a mill levy to supplement instructional programs including the school libraries. The openings will be at the elementary, middle and high school levels. These positions are placed on the teacher salary schedule. Denver Public Schools accepts ten (10) years of teaching experience in the last ten (10) years. For those applicants who have a MLS, but no teaching license, DPS will hire these applicants on an emergency basis if they are willing to acquire teaching credentials within 3 years. The District is especially interested in those applicants with skills in Spanish. The function of the Library Media Specialist within Denver Public Schools is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. The LMS will work with teachers to collaboratively develop learning opportunities to teach information skills. The LMS is responsible for managing, training, and coordinating the library staff, including volunteers. The LMS will manage the library collection which includes coordinating the acquisition, placement, circulation, and maintenance of all resources in the library. The LMS is an effective leader who articulates the vision of the program to the school community with enthusiasm and confidence and translates it into action by inspiring others to identify with and support its goals.
