Lynn: According to the World Book Encyclopedia CD-ROM my son got for Christmas, in an article called "Illuminated Manuscript", a "decorated initial" is a letter that introduced the text decorated with a motif or design. Contrast that with a "historiated initial" which has a "scene or figure" within the letter. I don't even know if there is a specific term for that ornate letter, but I told him I'd ask you all! Thanks so much for your help! Lynn Dressman, LMS Mt. Sinai Elem. Mt.
