According to the World Book Encyclopedia CD-ROM my son got for Christmas, in
an article called "Illuminated Manuscript",  a "decorated initial" is a
letter that introduced the text decorated with a motif or design. Contrast
that with a "historiated initial" which has a "scene or figure" within the
letter.

A teacher in my school is preparing a unit on the Renaissance  period
and has
the following question:  What is the correct terminology for the
embossed/enlarged/ornate first letter at the beginning of each chapter
in
some of the books that deal with Renaissance times?  I don't even know
if
there is a specific term for that ornate letter, but I told him I'd ask
you
