TECH: Which Macintosh to buy for film production class?

We are starting a film production class in school and have funds to buy a
digital camcorder and a computer.  From all the postings in previous months,
I understand that we should buy a Mac rather than a PC for editing purposes.

Knowing nothing about Macintoshes (our school is 100% PC), I am asking for
recommendations from those of you who know their Macs, have such a class, or
use digital cameras/camcorders in other ways in your school.  If you can
give me a model, or all the features/software the MAC should have, that
would be great.

I need this information really soon, as I am preparing a budget that needs
to be in within the next two days, and need to know what to budget.
