       There are more "First Ladies" who have direct library
connections. Here in Pennsylvania, Gov. Ridge's wife, Michelle, was the
very capable Executive Director of the Erie County Library System for
many years. As Governor, Tom Ridge is very aware of library issues and
has been very supportive of Pennsylvania libraries, including increased
state aid and the reworking of the state aid formula for public
libraries in the state. Had he been selected as Bush's VP (there was
speculation), George W. might have actually taken Pennsylvania...and we
would have an active library supporter as VP as well as his wife!
       Just thinking there must be others in high places we can thank
for increasing the awareness of politicians.
