GEN: Kate DiCamillo author visit

Kate DiCamillo was at our school yesterday for the annual author visit.  She
was wonderful.  Students kindergarten through six connected with her. The
fact she is a Newbery Honor Winner was icing on the cake for us.  Some of
the third grade girls who shook her hand were not going to wash hands ever
again.

If you haven't read or promoted Because of Winn-Dixie, I recommend you treat
yourself and your students.  Each classroom was given its own copy of the
book so that all students would have heard the story prior to the visit.
Some of the primary grade teachers were skeptical at first.  When a
kindergarten teacher had such success with it the skeptics tried it and were
pleasantly surprised.  The kindergarten teacher had a student who stayed at
the back of the circle all year until she started reading this book.  Then
he moved to her feet and was disappointed when she stopped for the day.

The book lends itself to extension activities nicely.  Our school had a
stuffed dog show, murals of mutts, lists of 10 things about me, and student-
made illustrations of the many scenes they enjoyed.  I'm certain these
students will remember their day with Kate DiCamillo for a long time.

One more side note, we bought books through the publisher for autograph
sales.  Candlewick was very accommodating and helpful even sending the books
overnight delivery when they were delayed at the printer.
