This is an embarrassingly late HIT for a query I had back in the fall (Sorry, I really thought I had posted the HIT already) Thanks to everyone who sent on suggestions. I asked for US history titles -- pre-revolutionary war period -- for really poor readers. Here's what I got. Title suggestions: Guests by Michael Dorris Courage of Sarah Noble, Dalgliesh George Washington's Socks - Woodruff Indian Captive is a good choice. Johnny Tremain Sign of the Beaver - Speare Author suggestions: James Collier Ann Rinaldi Conrad Richter (The Light in the Forest, etc.) Michael Dorris Series suggestions: Dear America series (female characters) My Name is America (male characters) “ These are diary-format novels by terrific children's and YA authors. They are small (less intimidating for lower-level kids), but they don't look too babyish. The writing is quite good, and they cover just about every period of American history, from the Mayflower to the Great Migration. I use them with grades 3-8, depending on the reader” bibliographic tools suggestions: America in Historical Fiction: A bibliographic guide" gives over 280 pages of suggestions. Written by Vandelia L. VanMeter from Libraries Unlimited, 1997. American Historical Fiction, an Annotated Guide to Novels for Adults and young Adults by Lynda G. Adamson from Oryx Press ISBN 1-57356-067-7 Rena Deutsch, Librarian High School for the Humanities New York, NY renadeutsch@worldnet.att.net =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
