I have to comment on this Laura Bush thing. She visited my school during the earlier hours of the campaign. Let me tell you, it was a lot of work: several meetings with her entourage, and a lot of kid prep on all levels (We are a PreS - 5 Elementary. We did everything from discussing "What is a campaign?" to reading stories from Texas. My favorite? Armadillo Rodeo by Jan Brett. You should have seen the armadillos the kids made - cute). She targeted our second graders, she was welcomed by one class, entertained by a second, and she read to a third. The entire school lined up to greet her (she must get tired of living behind glass walls, let me tell you, I wouldn't want to be in her shoes!). I really got to see her in action when she arrived at my library. Despite all of the hoopla, you could see the librarian shining through. She read *Officer Buckle and Gloria*. The kids had her whole attention during the reading and she offered them many thought provoking questions. The First Lady might be in a different role now, but I don't think that you can take the library out of the librarian. This is more than a profession, it is a way of being.
