I was intrigued with a short article in NEA Magazine about a New England high school library that became a book cafe for a week. I am thinking about doing this for just one day. Our school already has an espresso cart run by the parents, so I would try to get it moved to the library--sell inexpensive pastries, have many book displays (like the tear jerker one, and teacher favorites), and get readers to perform each period--a mix of local writers, teacher booktalks, creative writing students, speech students during oral interp., maybe a drama skit, some guitar in the background, a beat poet with bongos--and then invite English classes to come each period. Kids could browse and/or purchase drinks, etc. the first 10 minutes, then sit for the readings, then browse again. Has anyone tried this? Any suggestions? Anyone have a cool name idea? Am I nuts?
