Here are a couple of good ideas: I use Barbara A. Jansen's Trash-N-Treasure with 3rd-5th grade and know it works with MS level also. http://www.big6.com/lessons/reading_for_information.htm I set up a table (grid) with 3-4 questions across top, 2-3 resource titles along side. On overhead display pages from those sources, and have kids fill in blanks. I 'borrow' from whatever topics the kids are doing in classroom, select books that are 2-3 grade levels LOWER than class so they can work on the extraction rather than focus on reading skills. Some questions get answered from all the resources, some from only one, sometimes only part of answer in in one or all the books. A question like "3 ways Pilgrims cooked" might take 2 books to get all three parts. I usually have kids work in pairs. Have some paper copies for those that have difficulty with reading screen. I walk the whole class through (with discussion, and have kids come up and hilite 'treasure') whole grid before working more independently. Grid helps kids keep focused. They know all the questions they need to answer, they have list of resources. If teacher can supply questions, the grid can be extended horizontally, if (when kids are more independent) there are additional resources found, grid can extend vertically. This year I introduced Internet resources, table in Word, copy/paste to some 3rd grade classes. No paper! This is a neat role-playing lesson: "Tell the students that you are a teen-ager who has to take a phone message for your parents from a friend of their's who's at the mall, calling from a pay phone. The teacher plays the calling-friend.: http://www.big6.com/lessons/note_taking_with_fourth_graders.htm -- Robert Eiffert, Librarian at Image Elementary Vancouver WA http://www.ima.egreen.wednet.edu/library.html beiffert@.egreen.wednet.edu > From: Audrey Kendrick <askendrick@TRIAD.RR.COM> > Reply-To: Audrey Kendrick <askendrick@TRIAD.RR.COM> > Date: Sat, 7 Jul 2001 06:50:11 -0400 > To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU > Subject: Taking notes > > I am looking for info on taking notes to attempt to teach my middle = > schoolers who come in to do research how to do so.Any help you can give = > me would vbe appreciated. > > Thanks,=20 > Audrey Kendrick,Media Specialist > Randleman Middle School, Randleman, NC > askendrick@triad.rr.com > > =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= > All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law. > To quit LM_NET (or set-reset NOMAIL or DIGEST, etc.) send email to: > listserv@listserv.syr.edu In the message write EITHER: > 1) SIGNOFF LM_NET 2) SET LM_NET NOMAIL or 3) SET LM_NET DIGEST > 4) SET LM_NET MAIL * Please allow for confirmation from Listserv. > For LM_NET Help see: http://ericir.syr.edu/lm_net/ > Archives: http://askeric.org/Virtual/Listserv_Archives/LM_NET.shtml > See also EL-Announce for announcements from library media vendors: > http://www.mindspring.com/~el-announce/ > =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-= > =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
