Now, I've heard that librarians who came from the classroom are taken =
more seriously than those who didn't, too. In fact, my mother is at a =
school where the librarian has never had an education course--her =
undergrad is in library science. Looking at her, I can see where =
education courses--the ones that teach you how to teach--would be very =
beneficial to her work. But, I've also encountered others who received =
the same training she did who do wonderful jobs. I think, that the =
whole notion is based in where the librarian is, what the climate of =
that person's school is, and that person's dedication to what he/she has =
been hired to do. I think that a lot of the teachers in my district are =
more willing to work with someone who has been in their shoes, as a =
classroom teacher. It's easier to work with someone who knows what =
you're doing and what you're job is about. =20
The statement sort of bugs me too, particularly because I just finished =
my first year in the classroom this last year. To say that a librarian =
with no classroom experience is not as valuable to a school community =
(which is what that statement says to me) is the same as saying that all =
the work I put into my job this last year is not as important as someone =
who's been there 10 years, because I had little or no prior experience =
in the classroom.
