I have never taught in a regular classroom (other than brief subbing experience), but I do have a teaching certificate (School Media), as required by New York State. It was pointed out that research exists to show that school librarians who were previously classroom teachers are generally more successful. OK, but does it not then also stand to reason that classroom teachers with previous experience as classroom teachers are probably more successful than those without that experience? It seems to me that the issue is simply *teaching experience* -- those who have done it a while will often (usually?) be better than those who have not. And once you have been a school librarian for a while, even without having been a classroom teacher, you probably have the experience to do just fine. If this assumption can be shown incorrect by whatever research exists, please share it with me! - Norm Bagley, M.L.S.
