As a public librarian, I wanted to throw in my $.02 into the discussion. I am a public librarian, and I went back to earn my SLMS certification because: 1) I realized too late that I wanted to be a teacher 2) Should have gotten my SLMS certification at the get-go to avoid this going back to school, along with my MLS the first time 3) NY is changing their requirements to require more education background soon to get an SLMS certification. It'll be way more difficult without a prior ed. degree from what I understand. NY always required an MLS for this, and one also has requirements to fulfill that teachers do as well...(I am not too versed in the teaching requirements, forgive me) I am 2 classes away from fulfilling the requirements as I already took 2 extra classes in this and passed the teaching exams (standardized tests on classroon skills and a liberal arts test)-- next I will have an internship working in a middle school next fall. I wish I had done this when I first got my MLS, oh well...
