Below is a compilation of dress code ideas that I collected for my
administrators. I have eliminated those that require uniforms, don’t allow
shorts, or just seem too strict. I also eliminated a number that duplicate
others. Sorry I didn’t have time to repost all of them.

Tops must have shoulder straps that are at least 1 1/2 wide or be covered by
a shirt. Tops
must at least be long enough to "meet" bottoms when standing normally.
Bottoms must be fingertip length or longer.

NO wallet or heavy chains

No clothing that is obscene ie sex, drugs, guns, death or any type of
bondage
or beating. No sagging pants-if we see underwear they have to go get a belt
from the nurses office( we all brought in tons of old ones) or they use a
piece or twine. They get one warning. We have tons of old-clean t-shirts
from the lost and found and ones we all brought in. On their first
warning they have the choice of waiting in the office till their parent
brings a
suitable change of clothes (missing class they get a 0 for the work if
they miss all of a class.) ( we go over the rules each quarter to remind
them)
OR they can wear a huge old t-shirt from the nurses office. Obscene shirts
are turned inside out.

. Our rule of thumb is that no underwear
should be showing which eliminates skimpy tank tops and extremely short
shorts. We also do not allow bare midriff's or tube tops, hats and any
clothing advertising alcohol or tobacco or offensive slogans (such as Coed
Naked...). Our principal sends out a letter to parents in the spring
reminding them of these issues. For the most part there is little problem
with most of the kids but there are always a few! We even enforce some of
these rules at dances if the fashion gets a bit extreme or inappropriate.
Often the kids have come to the dance dressed appropriately and change in
the bathrooms! We then suggest they change or put on a shirt, jacket or
anything to cover up in the case of inappropriate attire. The biggest
problem we have is that our male staff is reluctant (in this day and age)
to address these issues with female students.....they usually ask a female
teacher to speak to the student.

A girl's skirt passes dress code if she places her arms
down by her side and her finger tips touch fabric--not skin

. Outfits that are too revealing or suggestive are
not acceptable. This includes halter-tops; half shirts (no bare midriff),
spaghetti strap, tube tops, and see through/mesh shirts. Shorts, skirts,
etc. must be fingertip length when arms are straight at sides.

. Students may not wear: tank tops, halter tops,
bare midriffs, and short shorts or short skirts/dresses. Heavy metal
chains of any type are not permitted at school. Clothing and accessories
with
inappropriate writing or pictures advertising alcohol, drugs, and related
issues or obscene language, and clothing that is torn, cut or styled to
inappropriately display the body and/or undergarments is not permitted.

A. Clothes shall be worn as they are designed – suspenders over the
shoulders, pants secured at the waist, belts buckled, no underwear as
outerwear, no underwear exposed.
B. Clothing with holes, tears or inappropriate patches will not be
allowed if considered obscene.
C. Bare midriffs and bare sides should not show even when arms are
extended above the head.
D. Clothing normally worn when participating in a school sponsored extra
curricular or sports activity may be worn to school when approved by the
sponsor, coach or principal. Examples would be cheerleader, drill team and
band uniforms, team shirts, etc.
E. Clothing that is too tight or revealing is unacceptable.
F. Garments and/or jewelry which display or suggest sexual, vulgar,
drug, alcohol or tobacco related wording/graphics or may tend to provoke
violence or disruption in school shall not be worn.
G. Gang paraphernalia, jewelry, tattoos or other insignias which
display, suggest, provoke or may tend to provoke violence or disruptions are
not allowed.
H. The following items have potential to cause disruption or threat to a
safe and positive school environment and are prohibited:
1. Hats, caps, visors, sunglasses or bandanas while on campus
during the school day
2. Chains hanging from the neck, belt, pocket or attached to
wallet.
3. Jewelry that contains any type of sharp object.

The following OCPS dress code standards will be implemented and enforced
in January 2000.
  I. Hemlines of shorts, dresses, skirts and skorts shall be no
shorter than mid-thigh.
J. Sleeves of shirts/blouses must follow the four finger wide rule
at the shoulders.
K. Shoes shall be worn. The Following are not acceptable: Thong
sandals (K-12)
Cleated shoes (K-12)
Backless shoes (K-8)
