Children's poetry. 975798 Shel Silverstein (all of them) and Jack Prelutsky (especially Pizza the size of a sun, and New Kid on the Block) are musts. I also love a general anthology of Children's Poetry, like Random House of Poetry for Children. Also, Halibuts and Hailstones is wonderful. For individual poems, there are nice versions of Casey at the Bat, The Gobblins'll get you, Stopping by the Woods, also children's by famous poets, such as Robert Frost. Oh, yes, you should get a book of limericks. How about Robert Louis Stevenson's "A Child's Garden of Verses"? You will also want to include all of Shel Silverstein's collections as the kids love them (humorous) along with Jack Prelutsky's works (some humorous and some a little scary, but all a hit with the kids). X.E. Kennedy is also a popular children's poet. I like Douglas Florian, Kalli Dakos and Judith Viorst's poetry books for elementary. I recommend the following authors: Prelutsky Silverstein Dakos Michaelson Random House Book of Poetry Dennis Lee Alligator Pie; almost anything by him is good Jack Prelutsky Almost anything is good Shel Silverstein Falling Up, Light in the Attic, Where the Sidewalk Ends Colin McNaughton Many good choices Robert Louis Stevenson Child's Garden of Verse Ogden Nash Custard the Dragon Edwin Lear Alphabet Arnold Lobel Pigericks Here are some other great rhyming books that could be used with poetry units Bruce Degen Jamberry Bill Martin Chicka Chicka Boom Boom I don't know off-hand of any great websites... but the Carolyn and John Lima reference books: A to Zoo, or Best Books for Children K-6 have excellent primary references. Dr. Seuss and P.D. Eastman books Jack Prelutsky does funny children's stuff [The Dragons are Singing Tonight] Robert Lewis Stevenson's [A Child's Garden of Verses] has not gone out of style. Mercer Meyer's [Liza Lou and the Yeller Belly Swamp] is one of my favorites. It is not a poem, but has rhythm and meter. Poetry for very young folk These are all books I have reviewed for either Booklist or Kirkus Reviews. GraceAnne A. DeCandido, May 2001 Nikki Grimes, A Pocketful of Poems. Clarion. 2001. Jane Yolen, Color Me a Rhyme. Boyds Mills. 2000. Judith Nicholls, Someone I Like: Poems about People. Barefoot Books. 2000. Joan Bransfield Grahma, Flicker Flash. Houghton Mifflin. 1999. And for good advice, see Lee Bennett Hopkins. Pass the Poetry, Please! Third Edition. HarperCollins. 1998. I use a book, Hailstones and Halibut Bones. I don't remember the author. It has poems about colors. The book is great for having the students do their own poems about a color. I have them back the poems on construction paper(the color mentioned in the poem). I also have them draw or cut out from magazines things that are their color...like red...apples...ruby ring, etc. Ferris, Helen. Favorite Poems: Old and New. Doubleday, nd. The illustrator is Leonard Weisgard. The blurb begins "Over 700 classic and modern poems make this one of the most comprehensive volumes available for children." There is a great website:poetry4kids.com. I adore The Random House Book of Poetry for Kids, collected by Jack Prelutsky. Poems are also indexed by subject. Of course all of the Jack Prelutsky books, Shel Silverstein books, Never Take a Pig to Lunch, Judith Viorst books, Small Poems by Worth, different animal poetry books by Douglas Florian.
