Dear Patsy
Hope you didn't just receive a blank email - apologies if you did.

Anyway, there is a national writing competition that is very popular in
Australia that you can find out about on
http://www.writearound.com.au/2001/index.html It is for Aussie kids only
but it might give you some ideas of the sorts of things to look for.

If you go to the Teachers Section, there are links to some of the stories
that were winners last year - my particular favourite is Inside Edge which
really does have an edge over the others (and as a judge I read a lot of
entries). It is interesting that a number of the state and zone finalists
are boys, at a time when there is a lot of discussion about boys and
literacy.

If you are looking for a very readable book that will help your students be
better writers (the kids will love it too) then track down a copy of "How
the aliens from Alpha Centauri invaded my maths class and turned me into a
writer ...and how you can be one too"
by Jackie French, one of Australia's most loved children's authors.
(Format: Paperback, 107pp. ISBN: 0207196818
Publisher: Collins/Angus & Robertson Publishers Pub. Date: July 1998

It is available on special order from Amazon for $5.95+ (B&N have it as
out-of-print and Chapters don't list it) so you might get it more quickly by
ordering it from Australia - try http://www.gleebooks.com.au or
http://www.dymocks,com.au Remember your dollar is worth about 2 of ours so
don't freak out at the $10.95 price tag - that's cheap for a book here!

Cheers
Barbara

Subject: SECONDARY: writing contests

Hello,
I have been a member of the list for about one year. Typically, I lurk &
learn a lot. I have always been impressed with the breadth and depth of the
help provided, so here is my first request for help.

I have been asked to research writing contests for grades 6 - 8 (middle
school). I am in the process of doing that through GOOGLE, Librarians'
Index
to the Internet and LM-Net's archives. In the meantime, if any of you have
experience with writing contests that are particularly well-run / fun /
interesting for students / productive, would you please send me details
off-list? I will compile the replies and post a hit.

TIA for your help.
