Hi all,
Thanks to all who took the time to offer suggestions for a booktalk on
cooperation.
My original post is follows, with your responses after that.

I need to booktalk a few fiction titles for 4th-6th graders with the
theme of cooperation. I am having a hard time coming up with something
not in the picture book section. I've checked the archives, and several
booktalk sites, but the only one I can come up with is Freak the Mighty.

Any ideas will be welcome! I could post a hit if there is enough
interest. TIA

A view from Saturday (mentioned 4 times)-- Konisburg -- Newbery a few
years ago. A group of misfits cooperate to reach a goal.

Try "The Wanderer" by Sharon Creech. In it a family group that have a
lot of
animosities have to cooperate to get a small boat across the Atlantic
Ocean.
The message of the book is more about appreciating each other's
strengths
than a blatant message of cooperation. This may be too hard for fourth
grade
readers.

Avi's book "Perloo the Bold" is about two warring animal societies that
end
up respecting each other and seeing how much alike they are.

How about THE LANDRY NEWS? also in THE WHITE MOUNTAINS the boys have to
cooperate in order to escape...

…in the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis the children have to
cooperate and
work together to successfully vanquish evil. In fact, don't Harry and
his pals in the Harry Potter books cooperate quite a bit? Hermione does

the research, Ron is the big pal and Harry is the risk taker. Maybe I'm

going a bit far afield, but it seems like many realistic and fantasy
fiction books do show kids cooperating although it may.not be the main
theme.

Do any of the Pee Wee Scout books by Judy Delton fit the bill? Or the
Magic Tree House books by Osborne?

Since my original post, I also found Bill Wallace’s Journey into Terror
fits the bill, because the boys must cooperate to escape from the
clutches of the criminals.
Thanks for all your responses. I think I can pull together a booktalk
with these titles!
