I do have a problem with some of the naive = stereotypes people have of Native peoples. I find that this month is a = good time to discuss these, as well as discuss our history and heritage. = As a media specialist, I support annual celebrations of African = Americans, Hispanic, Women, etc. I see no reason to not do this for my = own people. This practice has not made us "forget" any of these peoples = the rest of the year, but give us a chance to make real impressions on = our students. Making it an event helps insure teachers will make = definite plans to include it in their curriculum. I make a point of = telling my students (and teachers) that Native people still exist and = how we are of a varied and interesting backgrounds. I have a chance to = present books that represent fair potrayals and show how others play = toward stereotypes. The more the month (November or not) is promoted, = the more quality materials become available as we have seen with other = promotions. My teachers know I will discuss historical issues with our = students any other time of the year, as well, when it falls in their = scope and sequence.=20 Just another view, KImberly Thames Media Specialist Meadowcreek ES Norcross, GA tedkim@mindspring.com ktthames@gwinnett.k12.ga.us ------=_NextPart_000_0068_01C0A4CC.14C7DCA0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META content=3D"text/html; charset=3Diso-8859-1" = http-equiv=3DContent-Type> <META content=3D"MSHTML 5.00.2614.3500" name=3DGENERATOR> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=3D#ffffff> <DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>I am also Native American and I have no = problem=20 with having November as Native American month.
