I am at a high school in Indiana and would like to know how many other high
schools in Indiana have study halls coming to their libraries when the
library does not have a class coming in. We are a school of over 900
students; next year it will be over 1000. Since I am a new media specialist,
the principal has asked me to go to a couple of other high schools to see
how they are managed. First, I would like to know how many high schools
still have study halls that still do this. Second, I would like to know if
you would be interested in my coming to your school to see how you manage
it. Third, are you on a block schedule? My guess is that most of the high
schools in Indiana no longer have study halls. Most are probably on a block
schedule.

Our school is on a 7 period schedule on Monday, Thursday and Friday. We
have block days on Tuesday and Wednesday. Students still can have a study
hall in their schedule. Keeping the library from being a social gathering
place and on school related activities has been a problem with study halls.
Study halls have been allowed to send 25 students per period. We have
fifteen computers for students to use, which have Internet access. They try
to download games, chat, and instant message. The principal has told me
that this kind of activity is unacceptable when students are to be engaged
in school related activities. How do you handle it? The students have been
told the library rules. They are displayed. Misconducts and suspension
from the library has been enforced. They minimize what they are on when
they think you are looking or coming toward them. Any suggestions? My
library assistant and I have been told to be out in the library monitoring
the students on computers as much as possible. Our library is not unruly,
and I hope I haven't given that impression. But, I would like to know if
anyone else is in a situation much like ours and how it is handled. Of
course, we are still expected to keep up with our library work. Thanks in
advance for your help. If others are interested, I will post a hit.

Sincerely,
Denise Snyder
