Thanks to everyone who sent me suggestions of fiction for fifth grade girls. Here is my original target followed by some ideas from you...... ---------------------------- One of my fifth grade girls came to me today and said that she had just read "Are you there, God? It's me, Margaret" and how she really liked it and did I have another book just like it???? I gave her some Alice books by Naylor and 6th grade can really kill you (mostly thought the title might be intriguing!). However, I go through this all the time with my 5th grade girls who are really ready to read books that I feel are best suited for middle school, but I want to have some books that will satisfy them. So my target>>> Can you suggest some books that are like "Are you there, God?" but aren't too mature for a K-5 school???? -------------------------------- The Cat Ate My Gymsuit, There's A Bat In Bunk Five--both by Paula Danziger ------------------------------- What about the Anastasia books by Lois Lowry? ------------------------------ It's not like Are You There, God... but has she read The View from Saturday by Konigsburg? Voight's Bad, Badder, Baddest (Bad Girls sequel) really is pretty good. So is Roberts' Secrets at Hidden Valley. ----------------------------------- How about other Judy Blume books? ---------------------------------- My fifth graders love the "Sammy Keyes" books by Wendelin Van Draanen. This is a mystery series, tho. --------------------------------- The 5th grade girls in my school just love "diary" entry books-Amazing days of Abby Hayes series, Diary of Melanie Martin, other Judy Blume books are always good for them. Also try Paula Danziger, p.s. longer letter later. ------------------------------------ Take a look at JUNKYARD DOG, also ELLA ENCHANTED, THE PRINCE IN THE POND, HOPE WAS HERE (by Joan Bauer), MAKE LEMONADE, BELLE PRATOR'S BOY. ------------------------------------- Nancy Dickinson, Librarian Hillsboro Elem.
