This is Part 2/9 of the list of suggested picture books for my high school library. Thanks to all who contributed. A handful of pop-ups would be a good addition though with only $1000 you might want to save these until later. Order one cool pop-up everytime you do a regular book order and after awhile you'll have a few neat ones: The 12 Days of Christmas : A Pop-Up Celebration by Sabuda Young Naturalist Pop-up Handbook: Butterflies by Sabuda (anything by Sabuda actually) The WIde-Mouthed Frog by Keith Faulkner (get this one anyway) Maybe a how to make pop-up books book... For the 3 and 4 year old, David Shannon's "NO DAVID" and "DAVID GOES TO SCHOOL" are wonderful. For the older students, Patricia Polacco books e.g. "Pink and Say" (historical) and Dr. Seuss for all (Green Eggs and Ham for the young ones and The Butter Battle Book for the older ones). The Caldecott award winners would be a good start. Titles such as "Smoky Night", Golem", "So you want to be president", "Snowflake Bentley", and "Grandfather's Journey" are written for the older reader. Definitely buy picture books by Chris VanAllsburg. They are wonderful for older students and the art is spectacular! Patricia Polacco would be another good author. I would buy picture books by Bill Martin (Brown Bear, Brown Bear); Ann Rockwell. She has many titles suitable for preschool); Eric Carle (Everything he does is kid approved); Rosemary Wells, Eve Bunting (she writes picture books that high schoolers can relate to--ditto for Patricia Polacco)and Eileen Christelow (Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, Five Little Monkeys Wash the Car, etc.). For some wonderful picture book ideas, go to the different state book award lists. These picture books are selected by children. Try our Ohio list at www.bcbookaward.org Prayer for the Twenty-First Century Old Turtle Baseball Saved Us So Far from the Sea So many wonderful books that can be great discussion starters for even high school students. I would have any of the books that Thomas Locker has published. The paintings are wonderful. $1,000 will go quickly! Rosemary Wells - Bunny Money, Bunny Cakes, and Bunny Party Philemon Sturges - Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza Deborah Wiles - Freedom Summer Jacqueline Woodson - The Other Side Joy Cowley - Gracias, the Thanksgiving Turkey Liesel Skorpen - We Were Tired of Living in a House Julius Lester - What a Truly Cool World Ian Falconer - Olivia Sharon Creech - A Fine, Fine School Marisa Montes - Juan Bobo Goes to Work Gary Soto - Old Man and His Door Kevin Henkes - Julius, the Baby of the World, Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse Jon Scieszka - The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Stupid Tales Lauren Child - I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato, Clarisse Bean books Doreen Cronin - Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type Laurie Keller - Scrambled States of America Donald B.
