And a good start at these books include Cynthia Leitich Smith's Rain Is Not My Indian Name and her earlier picture book Jingle Dancer. If only she could write twice as fast and twice as much. Rain is such a brilliantly crafted first novel and deserves attention because it is a great YA novel; and incidentally one of few great books with a contemporary Native American as main character. Debbie -- I personally would appreciate your thoughts on a few other great titles that might be added to "the books on our shelves that present Native Americans as a people."
