Since so many people seem to be asking this question, I decided to answer to the group rather than individually as I usually do: The best instructions are at http://www.mitinet.com/Support/s_lcdownload.htm other suggestions are from a worksheet that I've used for presentations on retrospective conversion: Getting MARC records 1) Commercial programs that are Z39.50 products have a one-time cost of about $100-$300. Most of these programs have a free trial period where you can download some sort of program from the web and try it out. They enable you to download MARC records from LC and other sites and then upload these records into your automation program. some sites with good hit rates: Canadian National Library, Library of Congress, Cleveland Public Library and Melvyl (the University of California system) Bookwhere 2000 http://www.bookwhere.com/ 800-661-7274 Follett is marketing this Canadian product. (there is a 45 day free trial.) EzCat www.booksys.com e-mail: sales@booksys.com. product of Booksystems, Inc. of Huntsville, AL. InterCAT Pro http://support.tkm.mb.ca/intercat 800-565-6272 EMail: eastley@access.tkm.mb.ca MARCit http://www.nicholsinc.com/products/marcit.html from the folks who bring you Athena 2) OCLC's CatExpress allows you to download records off their database. The subscription varies with the number of records you plan on downloading http://www.oclc.org/ 3) Several people use and recommend Marcive, which provides the service for a fee. http://www.marcive.com look for the link to their WebSELECT section. You're able to see the record & modify it BEFORE you indicate you want to download it (after as many work sessions as needed). No charge for searches - only for the records you select. Orders are processed overnight, and you can receive your order via the web. The record price was in the $.20-$.30 range. E-mail address is info@marcive.com or toll free number is 1-800-531-7678. 4) http://www.freeMarc.com or http://www.librarycom.com/ from CASPR Library Systems supposedly lets you download MARC records free and seems to have a free one user online automation that you can use. One school replied that they were using it with great success but two more replied that the records on this system were far from complete and were unhappy with the very limited circulation statistic information available. The consensus of the two who were unhappy was that it just was not enough of a system to really be beneficial. 4b) BCCLS is very similar, except each record downloads individually. You can name each one something meaningful and track down problems more easily if some don't import. It's free. It is the Bergan County Cooperative Library System at: http://www.bccls.org/ 5) Downloading and creating microlif/MARC records from Library of Congress The best instructions are at http://www.mitinet.com/Support/s_lcdownload.htm 6) Access databases from other library systems. http://www.sunlink.ucf.edu/faq/marc_download/default.html links and directions for many different sites http://rrlc.library.net/ http://www.silo.lib.ia.us/silo.html http://sunlink.brodart.com http://www.alltogethernow.org/mp/72.htm#Top http://www.sunlink.ucf.edu/ http://www.dpi.state.wi.us/dlcl/wiscat.html http://maine.library.net http://www.auto-graphics.com/cgipac/mmx/odol http://accesspa.brodart.com http://www.wcsu.k12.vt.us/~winhall/lib_yp_l.htm#Cataloging http://skyways.lib.ks.us/kansas http://jvb2.jvbrown.edu:4001/htbin/opac/opac_home http://www.stcc.cc.tx.us/tlc/tlc.html http://www.sunlink.ucf.edu/ Library of Congress sites: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/resdev/ess/ http://lcweb.loc.gov/catalog/ The ALA website http://www.ala.org has links The following sites are for cataloging videos. http://www.sunlink.ucf.edu http://www.wiscat.brodart.com http://lcweb2.loc.gov/resdev/ess/booksquery2a.html http://jvb2.jvbrown.edu:4001/htbin/opac/opac_home Hope this helps.
