Hi, I am currently an MLIS student, pondering the idea of getting my library media certification. I currently work as a school library aide under a lady who has her associates degree in Library Science (an LTA). I was wondering if anyone has noticed, through either research or experience, whether or not library media specialists have a better sense of what they should be doing in a school library. The lady I work for is really nice, but it seems like the kids are lacking in development when it comes to library skills and especially technology skills. It never seems as though she plans activities for the classes other than reading them stories. I guess I was just not sure if I am being too hard on this woman, or whether or not I should expect that my job will be similar to this in the future-- or if in fact my future role as a media specialist will be more demanding and challenging (right now I feel less than challenged...) One more question-- do you find that you are respected for what you do as a school media specialist? Do the teachers respect that you are a professional with a lot of knowledge, or do they still treat you like you just sit behind the desk and check out books? I have heard rumors that school media people still don't get the respect they deserve. Sorry to be long-winded on this, I just wanted feedback from people about their general experiences as a school media specialist since this is what I am considering doing!
