The 5 finger rule is a way to teach students to judge if the reading level of a book is appropriate for them. I tell my students open the book to any page---read--everytime you do not know a word hold up one finger---if have all 5 fingers up before you finish reading the page---then perhaps that book is not right for you at this time. I always stress at this time. I suggest that maybe in a month or two they will be ready. I usually introduce this to 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders. Before we discuss the 5 finger rule I talk about how everyone reads differently. That what is right for one person might not be what another person needs. I hope this helps.
