Card Catalog Baseball Make an enlargement of several catalog cards on the copier and then make transparencies of them. They should show various kinds of cards (ATS) and various kinds of information (series, translators, illus.etc) Draw a baseball diamond on the white board. Divide the class into two teams. Put up a transparency and then have team members take turns trying to hit questions that you pitch to them about the card. (How many pages? Is it illustrated? Publisher? Illustrator? Author? Title? What kind of card aut, title , sub? etc.) The team gets a base for each question answered and a point for each question after the bases are loaded. If they miss a question the team is retired (only one out) and it is the other team's turn. No talking. As umpire if you think that someone on the team is giving the answer away you can disqualify the team and the other team is up to bat. If someone on the other team gives the answer away too bad. No talking and lights dimmed make this a very quiet game. If you like you can teach the library cheer. Mouth open in a scream, hands in the air, lots of cheering motion but no noise. Card Catalog Go Search (Go Fish) Use old catalog card sets with Author, Title, and 1 Subject card. Create a deck of about 15 to 20 sets of cards. Stamp the back of the cards with a rubber stamp picture. Create a deck for each group of 3 to 6 players and stamp each deck with a different picture so they don't get mixed up. Laminate them to help them last. Play as the game Go Fish. Deal out 5 cards and place the remainder in a pile. Players take turns asking one another for the TITLE of the book that they need cards to. Each time they get the card they ask for they get another turn. If they guess wrong they are told to Go Search and draw a card from the pile. If they draw the card they were sent to search for they get another turn otherwise their turn is over. When they collect all three they have a book. The player with the most books at the end of the game is the winner. Players do not have to give cards up if the searcher does not ask for the right title (subjects and authors don't count).
