Privacy Issues

Hi folks
I am doing another Masters at Uni (something to keep me out of mischief over
the holidays) and my first assignment is an information policy issue.  I am
considering doing something on privacy, particularly as it applies to
students' rights.

I am often intrigued by some of the things that members of this list discuss
in relation to divulging student loan histories, grades and what-have-you
and I am hoping that someone could point me in the direction of a source
(preferably online because of access issues) that details what you are and
are not allowed to do. Basically, who is allowed access to what while a
student is at school and whether these allowances change with the age of the
student. I would also like to know if these restrictions are imposed by the
federal, state or district authorities.

Australians are becoming more and more familiar with the Privacy Act
(particularly as it relates to disclosing credit details) but there is not a
lot of awareness of how it applies to the under-18s and I would like to do a
compare and contrast to see if it lends itself to the requirements of the
assignment.

This request also extends to any members who may be in other countries where
there are similar policies.
