By now everyone should know that XP has a "registration" that tells
Microsoft everything about your computer. If you upgrade your machine, say
by adding RAM, XP assumes that it is not on the same machine and becomes
barely functional until you call Microsoft and get permission to use it
again. This has been well discussed (and cussed) on various computer
newsletters. Personally, I won't switch to XP, and will insist that it not
be on any new computers (with an appropriate price reduction) I purchase.
At home, I'm switching all of our machines to Linux.
