Dear Wise Ones: I have an interview on Tuesday to become the Director of a small town (pop. 7500) public library (26,000 vol.) near here. I know that this was recently discussed here but would appreciate any help with preparation you can give. The town is home to one of the best Middle-High School LMC's in the state and borders a small city (pop. 42,000)that is home to a top flight private university. The last Director supervised a doubling of space and the automation of the collection into a regional cooperative. Our state is in the process of issuing statewide single bar code cards and has just developed a set of web accessible databases (an internet library) available to anyone with a library card. I have already signed on for the next available training session on the internet library and am very comfortable with all the inter-library opportunities available. What I need help with is ideas for programing that will bring the public to MY library rather than driving several miles to the larger city library. I have already had a telephone interview with one of the trustees, so I know that this is a big thing with them. The library has a small private endowment, but gets most of its operating budget from a town of fiscally very conservative taxpayers, who have been known to regularly vote against anything they see as unnecessary. Due to budget constraints the library is only open Tuesday-Saturday and the Director is only scheduled 30 hours a week, so it is also important to me to make the library an indispensable part of the community. The trustees want the library open more with a full-time Director and staff. They want someone to help continue the growth the library has been making in the last four years. I know that I can do this job but I need some of your ideas to get it. TIA Dorothy E. Tissair, M.L.S.
