SEC: Need help finding the title to a book

Dear LM_Netters:

Does anyone know the title of this story.  I don't recognize the plot
line...

The cover of the book has a dark haired girl with pale skin and a star
(jewelry) on her chest.  In the book, something happens to her parents,
and she has to live with her aunt.  An older man writes to her.  She
runs away from home to find the man.  To find him, she has to walk through
the Redwood forests and follow stones.

Any clues?
