TECH: Help with barcodes

Help!
I tried to order barcode labels this morning along with my other orders to DEMCO.  
They needed more information than I have, and couldn't answer any of my questions.  
I have also searched the web for help and information, but still have questions.  I 
AM SO FRUSTRATED!! And so, I turn to all of you :)  Time is of the essence, as they 
have put my order on hold until I call them back with the barcode info.

Their question: Code 39 or Codabar symbology?
My question: How do I decide?  Is this something that is dependent on the type of 
scanner that I get (can't afford one yet), or on my software (LibraryCom.com 
doesn't seem to offer any barcode info), or is it just personal preference?

Their question: Starting number______ Stopping number_____
My question: Can I just say 0 to 10,000, or is there more to this?

Their question: Check digit__________
Check digit calculation? No check digit?
My question: I have looked at various websites searching for info on this, and now 
have a vague idea of what a check digit does, but do I need one?  what would I put 
in the blank?

Their question: Four digit assigned library code?
My question: umm... what?  do I need this?  where do I find it?

Last question: Is there anything else I should know??
