Base your lessons on the curriculum and state standards. If you look, there are plenty of tie-ins for technology. Check http://www.iste.org/ for resources and ideas. Done right, you don't teach technology as a separate subject, just the necessary skills to do the job that needs to be done. Ie: don't teach chapter by chapter from _Word-InSideOut_, show the kids how to move the cursor into a sentence and change a word or whatever editing skill needs to be taught. The why and the how can happen simultaneously. Since you have MS products, take a look at http://www.microsoft.com/education/default.asp?ID=classproductivity for lessonplans and ideas. There are tutorials for Office products available at the site also. Some things we have done: First grade (and up) can do ABC or picture / sentence books in Word. Second can be writing and editing in Word. Possibly do some math and graphing in Excel. Certainly could write short reports (library research) Third can easily handle copy paste and other skills. That opens door to research / notetaking / bibliography. Which then goes back to write and edit. More skills in formatting could lead to cinquains and other formula poetry. Columns for compare / contrast. Tables for research and notetaking. Highlighter for notetaking (Trash 'n Treasure) Third and fourth can work with PP, expanding on oral presentation skills as well as visual displays. Examples would include science fair materials. Fifth can really fly with editing and rewriting. They can handle larger group projects also. Take a look at enc.org for many projects and resources for science and math. While it is nice to have a tech person running lab, remember it is the teacher and the class projects / products that should be determining what and how teaching is being done. Currently we have Microsoft Office 97 and 2000 in the lab. We have to wait for more software to be adopted by the corporation. The teachers are required to come to the lab once a week and teach a lesson. The tech is there to help. Most of the teachers have no ideas on what to do when they get there, so our tech needs to have some things ready for the kids to do. If any one has any suggestions or project plans, please send them my way. The class period is 30 minutes long. 1st through 5th grades. Thanks for your help.
