TECH: Opening a Disk

A student has asked me to try and open his document on
his floppy as I can get past the desktop security.  I
cannot get it to open either.  I tried going to My
computer and opening A:.  I can see the title of his
Word document but I cannot open it either. I get a
message "Make sure the document has a .DOC extension.
I am not sure how to check this and I also get a
message  System cannot read from the specific device.
 We have Office 97 at school and I am wondering if he
has 2000 at home and this is why it is not opening.
Any suggestions for me to try?
